FAISALABAD – Police conducted an operation against kite manufacturers in the city on Monday.
The arresting of women who protested at the crackdown caused uproar in the area as residents engaged in a riot with the police that involved throwing rocks at the police. In reply, the police was forced to shell the protestors in order to pacify the situation. Thus, the entire locality gave the appearance of a war-torn piece of land.
The police have stated that the women have been arrested because of their resistance to the crackdown. Whereas, the women in custody have accused that the police officials used to take fix amount of cash from them on monthly basis in order to allow the kite manufactures carry on with their business without bringing the matter into the notice of the authorities.
According to the women, the police took a sum of rupees 15 thousand every month but this demand was raised by them at the ‘basant’ season after which the crackdown took place.
